Using Fair Price
How does Fair Price work?
Point your camera at something for sale and take a photo. Fair Price recognizes the item, reads any price tag or menu in the photo, and estimates what locals usually pay where you are, using Google's Gemini AI and your approximate location.
Add the price you're asked, typed or said, and you get a verdict, a tip for haggling and a polite counteroffer in the local language. Tap Say it for me and your phone says it out loud.
What can I check?
- Scan: food, drinks, souvenirs, gold, carpets, tickets: anything for sale, one item at a time.
- Rides (Pro): pick a taxi, or a tuk-tuk or motorbike where they run, and where you're going. See what the ride usually costs, no photo needed.
- Attractions (Pro): sights around you on a map, with official ticket prices read from each sight's own website, or an AI estimate when it lists none.
- History: every check is kept on your phone with its photo, so you can compare as you travel.
How accurate are the prices?
They're a well-informed guide, not a guarantee. The usual range is an AI estimate of what locals pay for that kind of item where you are. Once enough travelers nearby have reported what they paid, their reports are blended in.
Prices still vary with quality, season, the exact place and haggling, and the AI can misread an item or a tag. Use the answer as a starting point, and trust your eyes too.
Official ticket prices come from the sight's own website and replace the estimate, but websites can be out of date: the price at the ticket office is what counts. Prices in your home currency use daily exchange rates, so they're approximate. More in our Terms of Use.
What do Fair price, A bit high and Overpriced mean?
Fair Price compares the asked price with the top of the usual local range.
- Fair price: inside the range, or no more than 10% above its top.
- A bit high: 10 to 35% above the top. Worth a polite counteroffer.
- Overpriced: more than 35% above. Counter firmly, or try the next stall.
At sights with an official ticket price, the asked price is compared with that.
Fair Price couldn't tell what my item is
Take another photo of one item, dish, ticket or menu, close up so it fills the frame, in good light. If a price tag or menu is in view, Fair Price reads it for you.
A check that fails, or where nothing for sale could be identified, doesn't use a free check.
Which languages and currencies does it support?
The app and its answers come in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese (Brazil), German, Japanese, Korean, Italian and Polish. Fair Price follows your phone's language, or uses English if yours isn't one of these. On iPhone, and on Android 13 or later, you can also choose a language just for Fair Price in your phone's settings.
Prices are shown in the local currency where you are, and in your home currency too. To change it, go to Settings › Home currency.
What do I need? Does it work offline?
An iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or an Android phone with Android 9 or later. Checks need an internet connection, because prices are worked out on our server. Your History is stored on your phone, so past checks are there even without a connection.
Does it work with Meta AI glasses?
On iPhone, Fair Price can also check prices hands-free with Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses. Glasses support isn't part of every version of the app yet, and isn't available on Android. See how it works with glasses, and our Privacy Policy and Terms for Meta AI glasses.
Free and Pro
What's free, and what does Pro add?
Fair Price is free to use, with a few price checks every day. Settings › Plan shows how many you get. A check that fails, or where nothing for sale could be identified, doesn't count, and your free checks refresh daily.
Fair Price Pro adds:
- unlimited price checks, every day (with a fair-use limit against abuse, currently 300 checks a day);
- fair taxi, tuk-tuk and motorbike fares in Rides;
- official ticket prices for sights in Attractions.
Without Pro you can still plan a ride and browse the Attractions map; the fare and the ticket prices are what Pro unlocks. Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription through the App Store or Google Play, and the price is shown in the app before you buy.
Is there a free trial?
No. The free checks every day are how you try Fair Price before you subscribe.
How do I cancel or change my subscription?
Apple and Google bill and manage subscriptions, so that's where you cancel:
- iPhone: open Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or your App Store subscriptions.
- Android: in the Google Play app, tap your profile picture › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions, or open your Google Play subscriptions.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends to stop the next renewal. Pro stays on until the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel a subscription.
To switch between monthly and yearly, tap your plan in Settings › Plan.
How do I get Pro back on a new phone or after reinstalling?
Your subscription belongs to the Apple Account or Google account you bought it with. If Pro doesn't show up, make sure your phone is signed in to that account, open Settings › Plan › Upgrade to unlimited checks and tap Restore below the plans.
To keep the same Fair Price account too, sign in with Apple or Google in Settings › Account (with Google on Android). Your History isn't stored in your account: it stays on your phone, though your phone's own backups may include it.
I subscribed, but the app still shows Free
It can take a minute for a new purchase to reach Fair Price, so try again shortly. If it still shows Free, tap Restore on the plans (Settings › Plan › Upgrade to unlimited checks) while your phone is signed in to the Apple Account or Google account you paid with. Still stuck? Email us the order number from Apple's or Google's receipt.
How do I get a refund?
Apple and Google handle payments and refunds, under their own policies.
- iPhone: request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Android: Google Play's refund policies explain how to ask for one.
Account, privacy and data
Do I need an account?
No. Fair Price works without signing up: it uses a random ID, not your name. Signing in is optional, with Apple or Google on iPhone and with Google on Android, in Settings › Account. It lets you use the same account after reinstalling or on a new phone. Checks and History stay anonymous.
Why does Fair Price need my camera and location?
The camera takes the photo you're checking. Location matters because prices do: a street stall and a restaurant charge differently, and so do cities and countries. While you use the app, Fair Price uses it to find your country and currency, your city and the place you're at.
Without location access, it uses the country from your phone's region settings. The microphone is only used if you say the asked price. You can turn any of these off at any time in your phone's settings.
What happens to my photos and location?
- Only the photo you take is sent, shrunk and without location or camera metadata, to our server and Google's Gemini AI to answer that check. Our server doesn't save it, and we don't use your photos to train AI. Google processes it for us and may keep requests for a limited time to detect abuse.
- The live camera view stays on your phone, and the app doesn't read your photo library. There's no face recognition.
- Your exact position stays on your phone. A check sends your coordinates rounded to about 1 km, your country and currency and, if found, the name and type of the place you're at. Our server stores checks with an area of about 5 km, never your coordinates.
- A smaller copy of the photo is saved with the answer in History, on your phone only.
All the details are in our Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my data or my account?
- History: swipe a check to delete it, or tap Clear in History to remove them all. It's only on your phone.
- Account: if you've signed in, go to Settings › Account › Delete account. This deletes your account, your profile and your usage counters. You'll confirm with your sign-in once more.
- Not signed in? Your anonymous account is deleted automatically after 180 days without use.
- Anything else, or a copy of your data: email support@bettelf.com. We reply within one month.
Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription. Cancel it with Apple or Google too.
Something not right?
A price looks wrong. How do I tell you?
- If you bought it, tap What did you pay? on the answer and enter the amount. Reports are anonymous; once at least five travelers have reported the same item nearby, they're blended into everyone's price range.
- Or email us a screenshot of the answer, with what the item was and the city you were in, so we can look into it.
- An official ticket price out of date? Tell us the sight's name. The price at the ticket office is what counts.
A check failed, or the app isn't working
Check your internet connection, and that camera and location access are on for Fair Price in your phone's settings. A failed check doesn't use a free check, so just take the photo again in a moment.
If it keeps happening, use Contact Support in Settings, so your email includes the app version and your phone's system.
